What each tool is really built for
ChatGPT: the all-rounder
ChatGPT is a general chat assistant for client emails, blog outlines, ad headlines and research. It has no brand voice library, so you give it instructions and examples yourself.
OpenAI lists four plans for individuals on its pricing page: Free, Go, Plus and Pro. For a copywriter on a budget, the real choice is between Free, Go and Plus. Not sure if Plus pays off for you? Our guide Is ChatGPT Plus worth $20 a month for freelancers? has simple break-even maths.
Jasper: brand voice for marketing teams
Jasper calls itself “the AI built for better marketing results.” Its pricing page talks about agents for marketing workflows, Brand Voices, Knowledge assets and Audiences. In plain English: you teach Jasper how a brand sounds, what it sells and who it sells to. Then it writes in that style.
Jasper’s FAQ also says you can create multiple projects for each of your clients. That is useful if you write for a few brands every week.
Copy.ai: a GTM platform with a chat plan
Copy.ai now calls itself a “GTM platform” (go-to-market: sales and marketing), aimed at companies. The cheapest plan, Chat, is the one a freelancer or small business would look at. It lists up to 5 seats, unlimited words in chat, unlimited chat projects and access to models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google (Gemini).
Prices: what you actually pay
ChatGPT
- Free: $0. OpenAI’s pricing page lists unlimited everyday text chats, with limits on uploads, image creation and deep research.
- Go: $8 a month, according to OpenAI’s Codex pricing page. OpenAI says Go “may include ads.”
- Plus: $20 a month, billed monthly, according to OpenAI’s Help Center.
OpenAI’s Help Center says there is no annual billing for Go, Plus or Pro. You pay month to month, which is handy when your income goes up and down.
Jasper
- Pro: $69 a month per seat billed monthly, or $59 a month per seat billed yearly. Jasper says the yearly plan saves about 20% and comes with a 12-month commitment.
- Business: custom pricing. You need to talk to sales.
There is no free plan, but Jasper offers a 7-day free trial of Pro. Jasper says monthly billing lets you cancel anytime.
Copy.ai
- Chat: $29 a month billed monthly, or $24 a month billed yearly ($288 a year).
- Growth and up: start at $1,000 a month, billed yearly. These are for large teams.
Copy.ai’s support pages say the free plan was retired. New users have to buy a paid plan.
What this means for your budget
Over a year, billed monthly, the gap is big:
- ChatGPT Plus: 12 × $20 = $240
- Copy.ai Chat: 12 × $29 = $348 (or $288 if you pay yearly)
- Jasper Pro: 12 × $69 = $828 (or $708 if you pay yearly)

Features that matter to copywriters
Writing in a client’s voice
This is where Jasper puts most of its effort. The Pro plan includes 2 Brand Voices, 5 Knowledge assets and 3 Audiences. Jasper says Brand Voice can analyze your content’s tone, then follow tone and formatting rules you set. If you have more than two regular clients, two Brand Voices may feel tight. The Business plan lists unlimited voices.
Copy.ai’s help pages describe a Brand Voice feature that learns from writing you already have, and an Infobase where you store style guides, positioning and personas. Its pricing page doesn’t say which of these are on the Chat plan, so check before you buy.
ChatGPT has no feature called “brand voice.” But Plus includes Projects and custom GPTs. You can keep one project per client with their style notes and past copy. It takes more setup on your side, but it costs less.
Chat limits and word counts
Copy.ai is the clearest here: “Unlimited words in Chat.” ChatGPT Free lists unlimited everyday text chats, though uploads and other tools are limited. OpenAI says Plus may have message caps when demand is high, and it doesn’t publish a fixed number.
Images for social posts
Jasper lists image generation and editing, plus tools like background removal and upscaling. ChatGPT lists image creation on every plan, with limits on Free. Copy.ai’s Chat plan doesn’t list images.
Plagiarism and languages
Jasper lists a plagiarism checker using a Copyscape add-on, and support for over 30 languages. If you write for clients in more than one market, that is worth knowing.
Working inside other apps
Jasper has a Chrome and Edge extension. ChatGPT Plus lists Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Sheets extensions. Copy.ai lists “2,000+ integrations” but not which plans get them.
Privacy and client data
Here is what each company says about your data:
- Jasper says it never lets third parties train their AI models on Jasper customer data, and that it does not use your data to train AI models.
- ChatGPT: OpenAI says it may use conversations to improve its models, but you can opt out of training at any time in your data controls.
- Copy.ai: we couldn’t find a clear statement on its pricing page.
None of this replaces your client contract. If a client says “don’t paste our material into AI tools,” don’t.
Which one should you pick?
This is our suggestion by type of user. It is based on published prices and features, not on our own tests.
Freelance copywriter on a tight budget
Start with ChatGPT Free. Use it on real briefs for a week or two. If you keep hitting limits, try Go or Plus. Plus at $20 a month is still much cheaper than Jasper or Copy.ai. Want to compare with another $20 option? Read Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus.
Freelancer with a few big brand clients
Try Jasper’s 7-day trial. If you write lots of copy for the same brands, Brand Voices and Knowledge assets may save you setup time. Do the maths first: at $69 a month, it needs to earn you more than ChatGPT Plus does.
Small agency or business with a few writers
Look at Copy.ai Chat. Up to 5 seats for $29 a month is the only multi-seat plan in this group at that price. One person alone won’t use the extra seats, though.
Small business owner who writes their own marketing
ChatGPT is likely enough. One tool for emails, posts, product descriptions and simple images. For a wider list of options, see our AI writing assistants guide. And if you run a one-person business, our solo stack shows how the pieces fit together.
FAQ
Is Jasper worth it for a freelancer?
It can be, if most of your work is brand-voice copy for a few clients. For general writing, ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month against Jasper Pro’s $69 (checked on 1 November 2026).
Does Copy.ai still have a free plan?
No. Copy.ai’s support pages say the free plan was retired. The cheapest plan is Chat, at $29 a month or $24 a month billed yearly.
Can ChatGPT write in a brand voice?
Not as a named feature. You can put style notes and sample copy in a project or custom GPT on Plus. It is more hands-on than Jasper’s Brand Voices.
Which is cheapest for a small business?
ChatGPT, because it has a free plan and paid plans from $8 a month (Go). If you need several people on one account, Copy.ai Chat covers up to 5 seats for $29 a month.
Can I cancel anytime?
Jasper says you can cancel anytime and keep access until the end of your billing cycle. OpenAI lets you cancel Plus in your account settings. Copy.ai’s support pages say you lose access when you cancel, but your projects are kept and open again if you re-subscribe.
The bottom line
All three can write copy. ChatGPT is the cheap, flexible starting point. Jasper is a premium tool for brand-voice marketing work. Copy.ai’s Chat plan is best value when a small team shares it.
Our advice for a freelancer on a budget: start free with ChatGPT, keep notes on what slows you down, and only move to Jasper or Copy.ai if a specific feature saves you real hours.
