A good AI chatbot is like a helper who never sleeps. It can draft emails, sum up long documents, brainstorm ideas and answer quick questions. For a freelancer, that can save real hours.

But there are many chatbots now, and they all have free plans, paid plans and limits. This guide puts eight of them side by side.

We used only each vendor’s official pricing pages, help centers and policies. We did not run our own tests or benchmarks. When we say a tool “lists” a feature, we mean the vendor says so.

Prices checked on 1 November 2026. Prices are in US dollars, before tax, at the regular monthly price. Plans change often, so check the official page before you pay.

The “At a glance” table below comes from our tools directory. Each price shows the date we checked it.

How to pick in two minutes

  1. Where do you already work? If you live in Google Docs, look at Gemini. If you live in Word and Outlook, look at Copilot. The best chatbot is often the one inside your tools.
  2. What is your main job? Writing, research, coding or admin all point to different picks. See our list by type of freelancer at the end.
  3. Is the free plan enough? Use it on real work for two weeks. Pay only if the limits keep stopping you.

The eight assistants

ChatGPT

ChatGPT has a free plan with unlimited text chats, subject to abuse guardrails, plus limited uploads, image creation, voice and deep research. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month and adds more of everything, along with custom GPTs, scheduled tasks and extensions for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets. There is also a cheaper Go plan at $8 a month, which OpenAI says may include ads.

Privacy note: OpenAI’s terms say you can opt out of having your content used to train its models.

Claude

Claude’s free plan lists web search, file creation, memory, connectors and voice mode, plus up to 5 projects. Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay $200 for a year, and adds the Research feature, Claude Code and Opus models. Anthropic says limits reset every five hours, with a weekly cap too, and it does not list a fixed message count.

Privacy note: Claude’s pricing page lists an opt-out for model training on consumer plans.

Google Gemini

Google’s subscription page says the free Gemini app includes image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month and adds more access plus 400 GB of storage. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month and lists Gemini in Gmail and Docs, expanded Deep Research and 5 TB of storage.

Google says these plans are for people aged 18 and over, and availability varies by country.

Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft lists a free version of Copilot, “subject to available capacity”. Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 a month and puts Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, with higher usage than the free version and AI image creation. Microsoft 365 Family is $12.99 a month, but Microsoft says the AI features are for the subscription owner only.

Microsoft also sells a Premium plan, listed at $199.99 a year in its store.

Perplexity

Perplexity is built around search, and its Help Center says Pro Search answers include direct links to original sources. The free plan lists 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month. Pro adds more searches, model choice and image generation. We could not confirm its price on an official page, so we give no number.

Privacy note: Perplexity lists an opt-out from AI training on Pro and Max. For a deeper look, read our Perplexity vs ChatGPT guide.

Grok

Grok is sold through “The X Subscription”. The docs list a limited Free plan, then Plus at $8 a month ($80 a year), Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200. xAI’s pages list web search with live citations, X integration, image generation and short video generation, and say prices exclude tax.

Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat)

Mistral renamed its Le Chat assistant to Vibe in 2026. Mistral says your account, plan and chats carry over, and chat.mistral.ai still works. The free plan lists limited messages and web searches, basic image generation and 100+ connectors. Pro costs $14.99 a month and lists up to 40 times more image generations than Free.

DeepSeek

DeepSeek’s own page says its app is free to use, with “no ads, no in-app purchases”, and lists web search, a “Deep-Think” mode and file uploads. We did not find a paid plan for the chat app. DeepSeek’s paid products are for developers using its API.

Privacy note: DeepSeek’s privacy policy says it collects, processes and stores personal data in the People’s Republic of China. Its terms say you can turn off a setting called “Data used to optimize experience” to stop your chats being used for training.

Also worth knowing: Meta AI

Meta says Meta AI stays free for everyday use. Its paid plans, called Meta One, are bundles across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. Core costs $7.99 a month and lists more image and video generation with Meta AI. We left Meta AI out of the main eight because the paid plan is mostly about social apps, not freelance work.

Things to watch before you pay

  • “Unlimited” has limits. Most vendors list fair-use rules or weekly caps.
  • Yearly prices look cheaper. Claude and Grok show lower prices if you pay for a year up front. You are locked in, so test monthly first if you can.
  • Ads may appear on cheap plans. OpenAI says ChatGPT Go may include ads.
  • Client data. Do not paste confidential client material into any chatbot unless your contract allows it. Read the privacy policy.

FAQ

Which AI chatbot is free?

All eight list a free plan or free access. The limits differ a lot. DeepSeek’s app is listed as fully free, while Copilot’s free version depends on available capacity.

Which is the cheapest paid plan?

Of the prices we could confirm, Google AI Plus is the lowest at $4.99 a month. Grok’s X Subscription Plus is $8 a month.

Should I pay for more than one?

Most freelancers don’t need to. Pick one paid plan for daily work and use the free plans of others for second opinions.

Are these chatbots accurate?

Not always. OpenAI’s own terms say output may not always be accurate. Check facts, numbers and quotes before you send anything to a client.

Did you test them?

No. We compared what each vendor lists on its official pages. We did not test speed or quality.

Our pick by type of freelancer

  • Writers and editors: Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus, both $20 a month. Claude lists long context and careful writing tools; ChatGPT lists more extras.
  • Researchers and consultants: Perplexity, built around sources. Check every link yourself.
  • Google Workspace users: Gemini. Start with Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month.
  • Microsoft 365 users: Copilot through Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month.
  • Social media and X users: Grok, which lists X integration and live web search.
  • Tight budget: free plans first. DeepSeek is listed as free, but read its privacy policy first.
  • Europe-based freelancers who want a European vendor: Mistral Vibe.
